Sandy Hook NJ

 

This was a new adventure for us. Its the first time the three of us ever visited Sandy Hook. We had planned on going to Island beach state park, but woke up in the morning and I mentioned that I would love to see the lights at the memorial of the world trade center. So while having breakfast, Steven did some research and thought we could probably see those lights without too much effort from Sandy Hook.. so.. we packed our meals and snacks and off we went !!

It was a bit of a drive, but the weather was awesome. We drove through Navasink and saw the twin lighthouses.. We couldn't really stop to get pics, traffic was fast and crazy.Situated 200 feet above sea level atop the Navesink Highlands, Twin Lights has stood as a sentinel over the treacherous coastal waters of northern New Jersey since 1828. Named Navesink Lightstation, it became known as the “Twin Lights of Highlands” to those who used its mighty beacons to navigate.

We got to Sandy Hook kind of early and decided to nose around. Located in Sandy Hook is Ft. Hancock.

Fort Hancock is a former United States Army fort at Sandy Hook.This coastal artillery base played an important part in the defense of New York Harbor and played a role in the history of New Jersey. In the late 1950s Project Nike antiaircraft missiles were based there. Fort Hancock was decommissioned in 1974.

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse,

located about one and a half statute miles (2.4 km) inland from the tip of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, is the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. It was designed and built in 1764 by Isaac Conro.. 103 ft. tall.

 

Before getting to the shore to see the lights, we moseyed around one of the bay beaches, It was windy, but very pleasant.

We found some shells, and actually some live barnacles.. How cool is that.. And a little crab which actually pinched Sonny really hard. I guess he had to learn how to hold them properly. 

 

We finally headed out to see the lights. It was starting to get a little dark and Steven wanted to recon before we actually went oiut with the wheelchair.

We sat and waiting. Seeing the Manhattan skyline without the twin towers is still very shocking looking.. empty..

In these following pictures , you can actually see the Empire State Building, to the right of the light, with red, white and blue lights.. it was awesome to see.. Also is a picture of the Verrazano Bridge.

 

 

These were really hard pics to get. You can only see one light because from where we were sitting, the other light is directly behind the one that is shown.

Well that was it, we decided it was time to go.The park was going to close down.. So we found a beautiful monarch butterfly ( hi mom) and a beautiful church that we just had to take pics of.,

And here we are , home safe and sound. We kept watching out for the light in the sky.. and we saw it until we almost reached Trenton.. That was amazing.

Our hearts go out to all the families who lost their loved ones during this attack on 9/11.

Labor Day Weekend, Sunday , Island Beach State Park

The shore was nice today. There were a lot of beach goers mostly though from the Bay side. The weather was gorgeous, just enough of a breeze to keep you cool. What a difference from Friday during Hurricane Earl. Never the less, we had a lot of fun. Here is Steven and Sonny goofing in the water.

The colors were just beautiful. While on our drive to the shore, we were marveling at how beautiful the sky was. We asked Sonny, if he were a weatherman, how would he describe the weather.. well.. after hemming and hawing we all came up with.. Mostly sunny with a few splashes of Gods white paint brush in the sky… and.. Mostly sunny with a few dollops of whipped cream.. hehe..

These were taken at Seaside Heights. We went to the boardwalk and got lucky, they had a fireworks display last night.

Birds birds birds

Here is a vid we took of these cute little birds.. We believe they are sanderlings.. In any event, they are just the sweetest, friendliest little ones Ive ever seen!!

Hurricane Earl at Island Beach State Park

Here is a vid, maybe two if I can get it to upload, of the storm surge at the shore yesterday. In all its power there is such beauty.

Hurricane Earl at Island Beach State Park

Storm Chasers.. we can be at times. This was a perfect opportunity for us to witness, first hand, what a hurricane looks like at the shore. The hurricane was way off shore, but the effects of it could still be seen. The winds were high, but not unbearable. You can hear it in the video. Never the less, the ocean was in turmoil. Not something to be trifled with. On the other hand, we had the shore all to ourselves. ..

    

Steven found a jelly fish washed up on shore, and of course he rescued it, hopefully. It was big..

And of course we had to play around with the sanderlings. They were playing grab ass the whole time, posturing and playing tag. It was fun to watch them and they didn't seem  that afraid of us.

The clouds were as marvelous and spectacular as the surf was.. So much beauty, such intensity.

And of course we all took the opportunity for a photo shoot of us!!!

We watched and watched. We actually saw some dolphins, pretty close, but weren't able to get them on camera. It was mesmerizing to say the least.

As it got darker out, we took some of these photos..
